Computers, audio and visual aids, and many other types of technology are becoming commonplace in today’s schools and not all teachers know how to use this equipment properly. In addition to technological advances, theories change, textbooks are scrapped for newer material, and science and history changes so rapidly, what worked one school year may not work for the next school year. More and more schools are offered completely online as well. To keep up with this ever changing process, teachers have a variety of methods to be able to utilize all of these changes to their advantage.

Adults can have a hard time adapting to new technologies, especially when they are being utilized in the classroom. Everyone remembers that one teacher who couldn’t figure out how to use a projector or slides properly. This has become even more of a problem in this digital age where teachers need to show movies with a digital projector or use computers for presentations. Luckily, there are many programs dedicated to training our teachers. Many schools offer free training for their teachers on-site and might even have that as a requirement now.

Many teachers go through a small, free session that lasts 2-4 weeks each school year and shows them the ins and outs of the newest purchases the school has made. If this isn’t available to you as a teacher, there are many online classes that are dedicated to training you or continuing your education as well. Check with your school board to see what they offer and if they will pay for you to attend these online classes. Many of them will pay for you as it benefits the school as a whole.

Each year, history changes and science proves or disproves many of our standard theories. The teacher who got their teaching degree 20 years ago, might still believe many things that aren’t applicable today and nothing is more embarrassing than being corrected by a student. Training in these areas is usually year to year throughout a teacher’s career but might be neglected due to budgetary restraints by the school board. Teachers might need to seek out additional training on their own. This is also true in other professions and the training of general office staff.

Most teachers specialize in one area so they are relatively easy to keep up to date with the newest information. It can be as easy as attending workshops and update classes that go hand in hand with new textbooks and other materials. Substitute teachers have it the hardest as they have to learn in a more general way so they are able to fill in for many different classes. Substitutes really need to keep training as much as they can. Teachers have a love of knowledge so they are usually very willing to learn and are excited about changing conditions and being able to present a curriculum to their students in a new way.
